Family Meal Time in Waialua

Waialua parents want to make sure that their kids spend time doing things that will help them be healthy and successful. Because of this, juggling the family schedule and prioritizing activities are a major part of parenting in the Mililani, Wahiawa, and Pearl City areas.

With all this competition for your child’s time, you may be surprised to learn of the advantages Waialua kids receive when families make time to eat dinner together.

Studies have shown that kids who have frequent family dinners benefit in the following ways:

Improved grades
Eating healthier meals
Less likely to try cigarettes, alcohol, and marijuana
Increase in family communication
Less likely to become overweight or obese

If you want to help establish a more regular dinner time for your family, here are some tips for Honolulu families. Start by setting a small goal, like sitting down for dinner twice a week, and then add days on after that. Next, involve the kids by letting them help plan and prepare the meals and set the table. Lastly, always make mealtime a technology-free zone: no TV or phones allowed!

And remember, even if you’re in a rush and have to pick up dinner at a local Mililani, Wahiawa, or Pearl City restaurant, take the time to sit down together to eat. Your family will still enjoy many of these benefits.

Fresh Ideas For Healthy Meal Planning In Hawaii

Fresh Ideas For Healthy Meal Planning In Hawaii

Hawaii children’s nutrition experts say that family mealtime is a must for Wahiawa parents who want to know what their children are eating and stay on top of their kids’ nutritional needs. But with busy schedules, allergies, and different food preferences, planning meals can be a challenge. Here are some fresh ideas:

To simplify things, first make a list of all the foods your kids enjoy, healthy and non-healthy included. Study this list to discover ingredient combinations or cooking techniques they prefer. Then find recipes for healthy meal makeovers.

Make your own frozen meals. Just double or triple the recipe of a favorite casserole dish and store the extras in the freezer so the next long day or unscheduled event won’t tempt you to eat Pearl City drive-up or unhealthy microwaveable convenience meals.

If members of your family have allergies or are super-particular, make a large plain meal and have lots of healthy toppings available so everyone can customize their own meal. This works great for tacos, pizza, sandwiches, salads and baked potatoes.

Another time-saving tip for Pearl City parents: cook enough hamburger, steak, or chicken breasts for two or three different meals during the week.

Is My Hawaii Baby Ready For Solids?

Is My Hawaii Baby Ready For Solids?

Although Mililani pediatricians generally recommend starting infants on solid foods when they are around six months of age, there are important developmental milestones that must be reached before your baby can take this step.

Even if an infant’s digestive system is ready for solid food, the baby must be able to safely swallow it. A baby should be able to sit with assistance but hold his or head up on their own. Without head and neck control, eating solids is difficult and dangerous. Many Mililani pediatricians also advise parents to wait until an infant shows interest in what other family members are eating.

If you are unsure if your infant is ready for solid food, check with your Mililani pediatrician. Remember that for the first year your baby’s nutrition will still come primarily from breast milk or formula.

My name is Dwight Kimbrel. I am an advocate for children’s health and nutrition in Mililani. I also sell XoBiotic Squares, a nutritional powerhouse. For more information on XoBiotic Squares, call me today at (808) 692-3461.

How Healthy Is Your Honolulu Community?

Tuesday, February 7th, 2012

How Healthy Is Your Honolulu Community? Hello Honolulu residents! Welcome to my children’s health blog, Honolulu edition. I came across an interesting article in Children’s Health Magazine that got me thinking about children’s health factors in Honolulu.

Have you considered how your Hawaii community influences your child’s health? In a recent study, independent experts compiled statistics on more than 30 factors that are important to a child’s development including: crime and safety, education, economics, housing, education, cultural attractions, and health.1

Burlington, Vermont came out on top, receiving high marks in all areas of study. Burlington has the fewest fast food restaurants per capita and experts believe this is linked to the low rate of obesity. Clearly, the rate of obesity in Mililani and Wahiawa is partially due to the ready availability of Big Macs and Whoppers.

While moving to Burlington isn’t necessary for your Honolulu child to thrive, ask yourself how your own Hawaii neighborhood ranks. If you think it could improve, attend Honolulu city meetings or make changes within your own home.

You could encourage more participation in sports, start a crime-preventing Honolulu neighborhood watch group, cook as a family, or seek out Mililani museums and Waialua cultural events. Whatever you choose, your children will reap the health benefits of your efforts.

If you want to improve your Honolulu child’s nutrition, contact me today to learn about a nutritional supplement packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

Safest Cars For Wahiawa Families

Safest Cars For Wahiawa Families

Hello Wahiawa parents! Welcome to my Honolulu children’s health blog. I am an advocate for improved health and safety for Wahiawa kids. I also sell an exceptional nutritional product called XoBiotic Squares. If you would like to learn more about one of the best snacks for kids, call me today at (808) 692-3461.

I like lists, they are short and to-the-point. Every once in a while I run across a ‘Top Five’ or ‘Top Ten’ article such as: ‘The Ten Best Kid-Friendly Restaurants in Wahiawa,’ ‘The Top Five Nutritional Kids Foods,’ or ‘The Five Best Family Attractions in the Honolulu Area.’

I recently read an article on Forbes.com that lists the safest cars of the year1. Here are three that caught my eye with my comments thrown in:

1) The Tesla Model S four-door electric sedan. (I’ve never heard of this car but the makers claim it will go ’300 zero-emission miles on one charge.’1 That’s a lot of trips to your closest Wahiawa grocery store with no adverse environmental impact!)
2) BMW Five Series. (This isn’t your ordinary Wahiawa kid hauler but it sure is pretty.)
3) Chevrolet Cruze. (This small sedan has the most budget-friendly MSRP of $16,275.)

As Honolulu parents, our children’s’ health and safety should be our top priority. When it comes time to buy a new family car in Wahiawa, remember to check the safety ratings.

Healthy Snacks For Happy Studying In Waialua

Healthy Snacks For Happy Studying In Waialua

Welcome to my Honolulu children’s health blog. My fifth grader’s elementary teacher recently sent home a note encouraging good homework habits for all of her Waialua students. The note included this suggestion: ‘Eat a healthy snack before sitting down to study.’

My kids and I sat down to brainstorm some healthy snacks they could eat before beginning their homework each afternoon. After compiling our list we headed to our favorite Honolulu grocery store to stock up on after-school snacks.

Here are my kids top ten healthy homework snacks!

Frozen grapes (or other favorite fruit)
String cheese
Fruit leather
Dried apricots
Nuts
Hummus with veggies
Yogurt
Celery dipped in peanut butter
Fruit smoothies
Popcorn

Honolulu kids can focus better when they have healthy snacks handy. Another important thing to remember is that kids are more likely to eat healthy snacks if they can choose their favorites. I am a local XoBiotic Squares representative and an advocate for children’s health in Hawaii. To learn more about healthy snacking, contact me today at (808) 692-3461 or chocolate@hawaii.com.

Hidden Sugar In Mililani Kid’s Snacks

Wednesday, January 25th, 2012

Hidden Sugar In Mililani Kid's Snacks Excessive sugar is a serious health threat for Mililani children. Do you know how much sugar your Honolulu son or daughter is really consuming? I am children’s nutrition advocate Dwight Kimbrel.

Here are some popular Honolulu kid’s snacks with more sugar than I realized:

Yogurt covered raisins
Fruit Roll-ups, Gushers, and Fruit By The Foot
Quaker Rice Cakes
Yoplait yogurt
Gogurt
Juice drinks: Capri Sun, Minute Maid
Flavored milk

The next time you and your kids are shopping for snacks at your Mililani grocery store, Honolulu convenience store,  or Wahiawa ball park snack bar, read the labels. Sugar content varies among brands.

Limiting the amount of sugar in your Mililani child’s diet is an important step toward better lifelong eating and oral health. To hear about another great way to improve your child’s nutrition in Hawaii, call me today!

The Right Bedtime Snack Can Help Waialua Kids Fall Asleep

The Right Bedtime Snack Can Help Waialua Kids Fall Asleep

Mililani parents know that sleep is important for their child’s health. If your Waialua child has a hard time falling asleep, you may want to try a bedtime snack. Well-chosen evening snacks can help ease the transition to sleep.

Eating too much before bedtime is never a good idea for anyone, but a small snack may be just the ticket to dreamland for little ones in Mililani. Foods containing the amino acid tryptophan are a natural sleep aid, especially if they are coupled with carbohydrates, which help make tryptophan more available to the brain.

Bedtime foods you can purchase at your local Waialua grocer include soy milk, dairy products, nuts, seeds, and legumes, such as lentils or chick peas. These foods coupled with a healthy carbohydrate make the perfect bedtime snack. Your Waialua kiddos will be visiting the sandman before you know it.

Try a glass of soy milk with a few whole grain crackers or string cheese and apple slices. Low-fat cottage cheese with pineapple helps my munchkins fall asleep.

I am a local XoBiotic Squares representative and a children’s health advocate. If you live in Honolulu, Mililani, or Wahiawa and would like to learn more about children’s health contact me today!

Easy First Bike For Honolulu Kids

Thursday, January 5th, 2012

Easy First Bike For Honolulu Kids There’s a new way for Honolulu kids to learn how to ride a bike. At first glance, balance or no-pedal bikes look just like any other kid’s bike. Look closer, however, and you notice that they are missing something: pedals.

In my Waialua neighborhood cul-de-sac, I have seen toddlers as young as two hop on these bikes, scoot around for a few minutes and in no time at all, they are balancing like a pro. Honolulu balance bike sellers say that when a child is ready for the real thing, no training wheels are required.

If you are interested in getting a no-pedal bike for your child, don’t buy a size up. Both of your child’s feet should be firmly planted on the ground when he or she is sitting on the seat.

I promote children’s health and fitness in Honolulu and sell a nutritional product that many Waialua families enjoy. To learn about the top children’s nutrition pick of the year, call or email me today.

‘Good Job, Bobby! Have Some Saturated Fat!’

Tuesday, January 3rd, 2012

'Good Job, Bobby! Have Some Saturated Fat!' Do your children’s Honolulu school teachers reward good behavior with candy or cookies? Don’t you think it’s a little strange to reward Waialua children with something that is bad for them?

Using unhealthy food as a token of merit undermines Honolulu nutrition education and encourages over-consumption of foods high in added sugar and fat. It can also set a precedent for emotional eating, prompting Hawaii kids to eat when they’re not really hungry.

According to a recent study in The Journal of the American Medical Association, over the past three decades, the childhood obesity rate has more than doubled for preschool age children and tripled for children aged 6-11 years. In short, about 20 percent of children are obese. Our children here in Mililani, Wahiawa, and Pearl City are no exception.

As a child health advocate based in Waialua, I encourage all Hawaii parents to use non-food alternatives when rewarding good behavior.

I reward my kids with a trip to the Mililani library or more outside play time. Food is used to fuel our bodies, not to reward us for doing things we should be doing anyway.

When my kids have had an active day at their favorite Mililani park we refuel with nuts and blueberries, which are loaded with antioxidants. Another favorite snack we like to eat to recharge is made from the cacao plant and is also packed with antioxidants.

For more information about this delicious Honolulu kid-friendly snack and other children’s favorites, please contact me today. Thanks for visiting my Waialua children’s nutrition blog.
